Spring Deworming Schedule for Horses and Cattle

As pastures green up across Mason County each spring, parasite larvae that overwintered on grass become active again — and so do the parasites already living in your horses and cattle. Timing your deworming program around this cycle matters more than the specific product you choose.

For horses, we recommend a fecal egg count before deworming rather than rotating dewormers on a fixed calendar. This tells us which animals actually need treatment and helps slow the resistance we're seeing in cyathostomins (small strongyles) across Texas herds.

Cattle on Hill Country pasture face heavier pressure from gastrointestinal nematodes and liver flukes once temperatures climb. A spring treatment timed just before turnout, followed by a mid-summer check, keeps weight gain on track through the season.

If you're not sure where your herd stands, bring a fresh manure sample by, or we can collect one on a farm call. It's a five-minute test that saves you from either under-treating or paying for dewormer your animals don't need.
